When inquired by a fan on Twitter if the company (which already manufactures some select Hunger Games merchandise) planned on creating action figures to be released with the film, NECA Toys answered with an emphatic yes. (Some film spoilers ahead.) They went on to elaborate that the first group of action figures will include a Katniss figure, a Peeta figure, and one other.
Though fans are speculating that the third will, of course, be Gale—Katniss’s supposed other love interest who is really simply her best friend—I’m not so sure. There are some bigger fan favorites at hand than Gale, I think, and I’m wondering if the third figure might, in fact, be Katniss’s beloved friend Rue, who reminds her of her sister Prim during the Games. Haymitch, the pair’s drunken mentor, would be a hit as well—I would buy a Haymitch figure over a Gale figure, myself—though it could be argued that he is simply as important and key as other characters, such as Cinna or Effie Trinket.
I really have my fingers crossed for an eventual entire line of character merchandise, however—and if the follow up is anything similar to that of the Twilight phenomenon (and so far, the buzz really is, I think, which is great, since I can’t stand Twilight), I don’t think I will be disappointed! I totally want an entire character line up of Hunger Games figures along the top of my desk. They’ll go quite nicely with the set of Wizard of Oz ones I already have.
What about you? Which action figure would you most want to have? I know some people who will be anxious for their Cato and Clove figures, and I would love a Cinna, Rue, and Thresh figure, myself, in addition to a Peeta and Katniss set, of course! It’s a bit too early for the Catching Fire film merchandise to be released, since the movie won’t be out until November of 2013, but I know I am not alone in wanting my Finnick Odair and Joanna Mason figures yesterday!
I wonder what else will be in store. Will there be more Hunger Games clothing, posters, maybe even plush dolls? I guess it’s sort of morbid for me to think that a mutation plush would be cool. How about Leggo sets? Though I am normally quite against commercialism as a whole, I love this series so much that I could really see myself getting into the merchandise pretty deeply.
