There's something … suggestive about this ad. Don't get me wrong; Handy Peel sounds like a dandy product. I know the feeling of nasty cuts on your hand when trying to peel a potato or carrot. Of course, it was all uphill after some bright fellow somewhere introduced the potato peeler tool but that's not the point of this ad, is it?
Long story short – you don a pair of rugged looking gloves and you meticulously rub some potatoes. Or carrots, whichever is planned for your late night meal. So there you are, your hands all nice and protected within those cozy gloves as you do the wax-on, wax-off moves on your vegetables. I told you something sounded off about the depiction of this ad.
And it certainly doesn't help that I keep thinking of Mr. Freddy Kruger whenever I think of scrubbing gloves. At this point, I will be immensely disappointed if young whippersnappers don't know who the Man-with-the-Glove is. I meant that other one from the 80s. Well, if folks don't know who Boyzone are, I don't suppose good ol' Freddy had a chance.
You know, one question arises in my mind after watching this video. Exactly how are you supposed to clean the fancy little gloves? I am guessing that the skin of carrots and other vegetables get caught in the abrasive bits of these gloves. And a quick rinse doesn't exactly wash these lodged bits off. So, are you supposed to dip the glove in a hot tub of water and scrub away with a brush? Again, I am coming up with Freddy images here. What's with the 80s and glove themes? MJ, Mickey Mouse, Freddy .... did I miss anyone else? I'm sure Wham had a long love affair with gloves too.
