I can just imagine a bunch of corporate big-wigs, sitting together:  "Well, your average American is broke.  Let's figure out how we can explot this... I know, let's sell them a useless product that we'll say will save them money."

It's kind of hard not to get outraged at the thought of some company being all "How can we squeeze more blood from this turnip?"

On the other hand, this is also a great example of the fool's gold that is "buying something to save money."
