Instead of checking out just one ad, I opted for infomercial bloopers this week. Some of them were bad, some were understandable mistakes and some were annoying little brats. Regarding the latter, I am referring to the number of folk who tag their videos as bloopers while it is really a homemade clip of two pimply kids trying to be funny. Other than the deceptively titled videos, I did find a few gems in this collection.
I must admit, this one was pretty funny. This little clip is about the free/discounted item that comes bundled with an unknown main product. This short video is only about the blooper bit; basically, you get a handy little garlic peeler which doesn't work properly. Or at least it doesn't on the first try, I am not sure about repeated attempts. In this case, you are willing to give the folks the benefit of the doubt. After all, it could have been a failed first try. But then you hear the demonstrator's frustrated retort at the end of the clip: "Why can't these? products work like they say they do?". Right. Thanks for that enlightening remark.
This one was obviously a normal off-screen accident that was unwittingly caught on camera. It is for the 12 ½ Aluminum Telescoping Ladder and features a most unfortunate moment when a guy falls off. To be fair, it looks like the area for demonstration was to blame as opposed to the ladder itself. After all, this ladder looks handy and functional. Perhaps it is my memory of the rickety-spider ladder ad that is making me partial to this new ladder.
And now for the last one. This clip contains a collection of infomercial bloopers. Some of them are funny, some are a bit lame. Do note, almost all of them are old Shop At Home ads and the quality is a bit off on some of the segments. Where bloopers are concerned, one of the funnier moments was about the coin collection. The wtf moment was not because the coins fell off the display. Rather, it was the candid admission of the guy where he blurts out: “This is the second time!”. Then there was the netbook ad. You always expect those folks to drop the device especially when they hold it up like so. I just didn't expect the TV to take a fall. A very Ben Stiller moment. The best part? Wait til you get to the DVD player ad and be patient until they cut to graphics. Listen out and you'll hear a desperate cry for help from the presenter: “Shoot me!”
